Our parents survived the trials of the depression and the tribulations of WWII. That theme is that we are mired not merely in a financial crisis, like the depression, but in a full-blown war in Afghanistan, similar to the times of our parents, when they were called to fight two wars simultaneously. One provoked and one that was just a case of stopping some bullies from ravaging weaker countries. .Amor Patriae

It wasn't rock. It was gold, part of a hoard so vast it rewrote what we thought we knew about wealth in Southeast Asia before Europeans ever arrived. For three centuries, Spanish conquistadors tore through the Americas chasing the legend of El Dorado, a lost city of gold. They were on the wrong continent the entire time.
Long before Magellan's ships reached these shores, Filipino goldsmiths were casting sacred regalia so precise that European silversmiths admitted they could be fooled by it. Kings wore gold on their teeth. Boats were buried with their owners in gold. Then it all disappeared, not lost to time by accident, but buried on purpose, and then erased from memory by the conquest that followed. This is the story of how an empire's worth of gold vanished into the ground, and how a nation forgot it was ever rich.
